Haldiram’s Ventures Into Plant Protein Space, Launches Keema Pao and Keema Samosa

Haldiram’s, the country’s leading QSR chain and manufacturer of packaged snacks, has ventured into the plant protein segment in collaboration with New Delhi-based alternative protein company BVeg Foods.

The restaurant chain is now offering plant-based Keema Pao and Keema Samosa as part of its winter special menu 2021 across all 80 restaurants spread out in northern India. Made with plant protein and fresh vegetables, the keema pao and keema samosa are an ethical and sustainable retake on classic Indian favourites.

The launch of plant protein by Haldiram’s is a significant milestone for the burgeoning plant protein segment in India and will help it gain mass market momentum.

In October this year, BVeg Foods announced the launch of its plant-based sausages in over 91 outlets of convenience store chain 24Seven located across Delhi/NCR and Chandigarh.

The Good Food Institute India data shows that over $3billion were invested in alternative protein industry globally in 2020, and 2021 is proving to be a breakout moment for Indian companies.

BVeg Foods worked with GFI India extensively to identify the gaps in the market in the manufacturing space, conceptualize solutions, and create a plan for an end-to-end solution provider to aid the entire industry’s growth.

They aim to transform this space using best-in-class European high moisture extrusion technology, strong in-house product development capabilities and a state-of-the-art processing facility, said a company statement.

Commenting on the launch, Akanksha and Prateek Ghai, BVeg Foods founders, said, ” It gives us immense joy to associate with such a pioneering brand and together we believe we can bring protein to the centre of the plate along with a smile to a lot of faces. Our product development and innovation teams have joined hands and gone all out to ensure the products resonate with consumers’ all-time favourites at Haldiram’s and we look forward to receiving the feedback of the people.”

BVeg Foods aims to launch its products through additional channels in the coming months.

The Indian Market Research Bureau suggests that protein deficiency in Indians is more than 80%, and as per the recent National Sample Survey, India has a declining per capita protein consumption in both urban and rural areas. Moreover, 93% per cent of the population is unaware of their daily protein intake requirement.

GFI India Managing Director Varun Deshpande said, “2021 is proving that India is an exciting market for next-generation, tasty, and protein-rich plant-based foods, particularly in a post-pandemic era. Indian palates are ready for delectable foods which happen to be vastly superior for planetary and public health. Cherished brands like Haldiram’s can truly scale that impact to the true mass market – we commend BVeg Foods and Haldiram’s for this partnership!”
