Indian Cricket’s Vegan Posterboy Virat Kohli Turns 32!

Indian cricket team captain and one of India’s finest skippers Virat Kohli has turned 32 today. Besides being famous for his field performance, Kohli has also made headlines due to his dietary habits. A popular English daily had reported in 2018 that the batsman has embraced veganism. Since then, he has talked about the positive impact vegan diet has had on his health and game on several platforms.

Media reports claim that Kohli has steered away from dairy and meat products to improve his game and increase his fitness levels. In a Twitter post, Kohli wrote, “Saw game changers on Netflix. Being a vegetarian athlete has made me realise what I have believed all these years regarding diet was a myth. What an amazing documentary and yes I’ve never felt better in my life after I turned vegetarian.”

He was a hardcore non-vegetarian earlier and has often expressed his love for chicken in media. However, due to health issues, he considered making the switch and is now fitter than ever. His wife, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, has been a vegetarian for a long time and was also named as ‘Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity’ in 2015 by PETA.

Besides Kohli, there are some other athletes who have taken to veganism due to ethical or health concerns. Tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, sprinter Carl Lewis Lionel, Argentine footballer Andrés Messi are amongst world’s top sportspersons who turned vegan.

Kohli can be credited for bringing the term ‘vegan’ to the mainstream. Being an idol for millions of cricket aficionados in India, his switch to a vegan lifestyle might push many others to try this ethical lifestyle. With several myths about veganism circulating in social media, people look at it with suspicion. But when famous celebrities vouch for this lifestyle, many others get inspired. Celebrities across different fields have adopted veganism and openly advocate it through their social media handles. With proper research, it is easy to make the switch. One must try out different food items and see what works best for them.
