The global milk market is forecast to grow to a US $200 billion in 2029 from the US $157 billion currently. On the other hand, the plant-based market is growing quicker at a CAGR of 8%. It is racing towards achieving a market value of $14 billion in 2019 to a whooping US $30 billion by the year 2029.

Increased awareness on the ecological and ethical consequences associated with animal-derived products is peaking consumer interest in plant-based milk. In the interim of July 2020 to June 2021, it has increased 2.5 times compared to all the previous years.

Oat, soy and almond have emerged as the topmost vegan milks of the year. According to abillion’s 2020 published data report “The rise of Alternative Diaries”, it was predicted that oat milk would dominate the dairy market. Oat is both environmentally sustainable and comes at a low cost of production.

Alpro’s ‘Soya Plain Drink Original’ won the first place and has been consistently innovating in the plant-based innovation business since 1980. The Belgian brand has been trailblazing the vegan market and is expanding too. In 2017 Alpro joined the Danone family.

Swedish brand OATLY’s ‘Oat Drink Barista Edition’ came in second. The brand has been consistently perfecting their dairy alternatives for the last 25 years. They have emerged as a sustainability focused body and this has in turn raised their audience appeal by a notch. After securing a valuation of $2.12 billion in their recent IPO, OATLY will be furthering its product research and development operations.

Two Argentinean brands by the name Vivet and Vrink also made it to the top 10 best vegan milks list. While Vivet is a vegan supermarket and restaurant which ventured into vegan products, Vrink is a 100% plant-based drink company. Their products are nutrient dense and sans preservatives.

“In 2020, we published a report on alternative dairy that suggests that vegan milks are the fastest-growing category in dairy. Europe, South America, and North America are the most developed markets for alternative dairy products. In contrast, Asia and Africa are in their nascent stages, pointing towards a market expansion opportunity for brands that produce dairy-free products,” observes Vikas Garg, the founder and CEO of abillion.

“We are excited to see smaller, regional players emerging and gaining popularity in this space. abillion is on a mission to connect responsible consumers to these businesses that offer quality plant-based products and make this world more sustainable.”
